Style and Pattern
With various colors to choose from, several different sizes, and a variety of thicknesses, natural roofing slate offers an incredible range of exterior possibilities.
Single Size and Random Width
The two most common installation styles are Single Size and Random Width. As the name implies, a Single Size slate roof has slate of only one length and width. A Random Width slate roof has a variety of widths, all of the same length.
Hang Downs
A less traditional but highly effective style is that of the “hang downs”. Simply, a number of longer slates are installed among the standard slates creating a textured, irregular look. This effect can be accentuated by using different thickness slates in conjunction with the longer hang down pieces.
Thickness
With the thickness of the slate roof, there are no hard rules on what sizes or thicknesses should be used. Depending on the project, only 3 or 4 lengths can be included in the graduation with as many different thicknesses, or all 7 standard lengths can be employed with only one or two thicknesses. There are lots of options when it comes to this – Please give us a call, we’d be happy to discuss them with you.
Texture
Texture is another contributor that differentiates roofing slates. In the roofing industry it is a term used to describe both the surface features of an individual piece and the overall appearance of a roof.
Grade
Roofing slate grade is influenced by the quality of the stone and by the quality of the manufacturing process that makes that stone into a roofing slate.
The top 3 grades are S-1 with a 75+ year expected life, S-2 with a 40 – 75 year expected life, S-3 with a 20 – 40 year expected life.
