Here in Tennessee, we finally had our first snowfall. We woke up to snow on the ground and icicles hanging from our roofs. Although icicles are pretty as they glisten in the sun, they could also be a sign of ice damming underneath your shingles.
Here is a fun fact – The hanging icicles occur when heat rises from the house, melting the snow on top of the roof creating water to run off. The continuous dripping of water eventually freezing creating icicles.
However, the main issue is not the icicles, but the ice that backups behind it. Too much water run off eventually creates an ice dam on your roof, causing the shingles to absorb the water, which in turn creates roof leaks. As the homeowner, you can reduce the likelihood of an ice dam or backup with the correct roof insulation and ventilation.

The other culprit can be your gutters. If water gathers inside your gutter, it can freeze preventing water from flowing. That is why it is so important to have your gutters cleaned and repaired before winter comes.
What we want to do is give you as much information as possible to prevent any further damage to your home. Most of saw our social media feeds with several of our friends homes damage from ice dams. Walls that caved in or collapsed, ceilings that were riddle with water, and gutters that were falling down from the weight of ice. We don’t want that to happen again.
